Cave dwelling

Bhalil, MA

Calling on Berber Cave Dwellers in Bhalil, Morocco

The facade looks like every other in this Moroccan mountain village of whitewashed houses trimmed an auspicious blue. Yet as your hostess welcomes you inside, you realize this is no ordinary dwelling. In the dim light, you notice the many mattresses and pillows softening the rock-solid walls of the cavernous living room. Then you spy the kitchen where your hostess simmers her tagines and stores her pots and blender. As she hands you a steaming cup of fragrant mint tea, you ponder how the troglodytes of Bhalil have lived in these caverns so well for so long.
