Salsa Dancing at a Backyard Fiesta in SF's Mission District
On Sunday afternoons, the Mission’s 24th Street fills with sidewalk ranchero music and the burnt cinnamon of fresh churros. Sidle up to the counter at La Torta Gorda for the Mexican sandwich oozing cheese and avocado, consult Ms. Teriosa about your cosmic fate, and wander down alleyways covered in murals of immigrant workers, underworld demons, and kung fu fighters. Follow the music towards York Street and into a tiny taquería called Casa Sanchez, where a backyard fiesta is in full swing. With Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Chepito Areas on the timbales and a trombonist who loves to boogie while he plays, these guys get everyone to put down their Corona and salsa dance like no one is watching.
