Tossing Confetti and Pretending to Samba in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
In Rio de Janeiro, enemies forget their differences and forgotten friends are found again. For five days, Brazilians stop work, leave their worries behind, and head to the streets decked in glitter and confetti to celebrate Carnaval, the biggest holiday of the year. Join in samba and song during one of the many blocos, or street parades, in which Havaiana-clad Brazilians sing their favorite neighborhood marchinhas. The bloco in downtown Rio boasts the best costumes but the Sambadromo is the spot to see local Samba schools show off incredible floats. More than just Mardi Gras, Carnaval celebrates neighbors and friendships and strongly unites the city so much so that even the buses fill with elated singing. Event date: January, February
