Exploring Science in San Francisco, California

The California Academy of Sciences combines inventive architecture and eye-opening exhibits to inspire visitors to explore and protect the natural world. The aquarium alone is enough to boggle one's mind, with more than 38,000 species to admire in several ecosystems. Come nose to beak with an African penguin, watch sharks and stingrays cruise beneath your feet, and wander through the tide pools among the splashing waves. Make sure to catch a glimpse of the fearsome albino alligator—either from the surface, or an even more terrifying underwater window where even the bravest may feel like fish food.

California Academy of Sciences

After diving into the world under the sea in the aquarium, delving deep into the depths of the four-story rainforest, and flying off into space in the planetarium inside the newly renovated California Academy of Sciences, the only experience that can top it all is literally on top: The Living Roof. The rolling hills and varied vegetation (all native California species!) is no doubt impressive, but what is really spectacular is the view around it. With the gorgeous De Young Museum across the way and the charm of Golden Gate Park surrounding you, there's no better place to watch the sunset... as a spectrum of colors encase you from every direction and the circular windows of the rooftop remind you that this very moment is truly out of this world!

CA Academy of Sci-Golden Gate Park

Where else can you come face-to-snout with an albino alligator, walk under a swamp, soar through the outer reaches of the solar system, and explore a rainforest in the same hour? The remodeled California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park combines sustainability with state-of-the-art technology to bring the outside world indoors - with a planetarium, a coral reef, a steamy rainforest filled with fluttering butterflies, and its groundbreaking "living roof" (a rolling plot of native grasses, skylights, and solar panels).

California Academy of Sciences

Imagine traipsing the flooded rainforests of Costa Rica, peering into the bat caves of Borneo, and gazing at planet Earth from space... all in one night. Each week the California Academy of Sciences opens its doors after hours to scores of San Franciscans seeking an enlightening alternative to the usual bar scene, pumping live music through the natural history museum. Marvel at the chameleons of Madagascar while sipping martinis, explore the world's deepest living coral reef tank, and fly through the cosmos of a digital planetarium. The only hangover this nightlife will leave you with will be a lingering sense of fascination, wonder, and appreciation for the natural world.
