Pondering the Symbol of a City in Grand Rapids, Michigan
If public art is meant to be celebrated, Grand Rapids has done an outstanding job of doing just that. The city is home to La Grande Vitesse, a colossal painted steel sculpture (1969) by world-renowned artist, Alexander Calder. The piece is incorporated into the city's flag, street signs, and logo, but perhaps most telling, it resides the Calder Plaza, a public square in the heart of the city's government district. The plaza is a hotspot for art and cultural festivals, social protests, public demonstrations, and political speeches (President Obama spoke in front of the sculpture during his campaign). Few pieces of art have interwoven themselves into the fabric of a city as much as "The Calder" has in Grand Rapids.
