Celebrating America's Pastime With the Cyclones in Coney Island, NYC
There’s a spot outside KeySpan Park with dogs on the grill, and Big-Gulp-sized brews for $5. Hair metal blares joyfully from the speakers. Insta-tailgate. Baseball will keep for an inning or two. When you do make it into the stands, you’ll find a friendly mix of fans and families cheering the Cyclones (who wear their socks knee-high, like the old-time ballplayers did). Every seat is a good one and the ocean air gentles August’s broiling heat. The ‘Clones announcer sounds like a cranked-up carny borrowed from the midway, but then, this is Coney Island. The Wonder Wheel—Highest Ferris Wheel in the World!—rotates sluggishly above the center field wall. Daisy-duked cheerleaders strut on platforms, joined by mascot Sandy the Seagull. Yes it’s cheesy; it’s minor league baseball. That’s the beauty. You can root-root-root for the home team—if they don’t win, who cares? It’s Class A. Grab another beer, go check out the Snake Lady.
