#604 Deciphering Hieroglyphs With the Rosetta Stone in London, England
Much more than a work of art, the trilingual Rosetta Stone transgresses the boundaries of time and promotes human understanding. From 196 BC, this stele relates a decree issued during the reign of Ptolemy V in three scripts: hieroglyphic, demotic and classical Greek. When French scholar Jean-Francois Champollion translated the text, he solved one of the world’s great mysteries: how to read the hieroglyphs of the ancient Egyptians. Discovered 210 years ago in Rosetta (Rashid), Egypt by Napoleon’s soldiers, the stone has been housed in the British Museum since 1802. Understandably, Egypt wants it back.
