Hiding From the City on the Bloomingdale Trail in Chicago, Illinois
Freight trains once trudged along these three miles of abandoned tracks, elevated a story high among warehouses, open lots, tract housing, and luxury lofts. Enter at the McCormick YMCA and exit just before Ashland Avenue. Though you’re strolling smack dab in the middle of Humboldt Park, then Bucktown and Wicker Park, the only other soul you’ll encounter up here is that of Chicago’s railroad glory days. As the broken glass, pebbles, and bottle caps crackle beneath your feet, try to envision the city’s plans to convert these overgrown rails into a trail within a public park. For now though, it’s all yours.
