Parking at a Swell Drive-In in Baltimore, Maryland

Somewhere on the way to stadium seating, THX, Netflix, and TiVo, drive-in movie theaters fell by the wayside. Bengies, a pleasing anachronism in operation since 1956, never stopped screening flicks for drivers and passengers—local filmmaker John Waters even used it as a film location. At twilight, modern movies and vintage trailers light up the country’s largest silver screen, which stands 52 feet tall and 120 feet wide. Moviegoers can tune in on their autos’ AM/FM radios, and the snack bar serves a variety of refreshments from jumbo tubs of popcorn to pulled pork sandwiches and ice cream floats. In look and feel, Bengies is pure vintage Americana—its talkies the perfect nostalgic antidote to the stress of modern life Event date: April - October
