Answering the Muezzin's Call in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The Baščaršija is Sarajevo's Turkish district with its small shops selling brass ware and evil eyes and the smell of roasting kebab meat hanging in the air. The five-time daily call to prayer is another sign of the eastern influence on this melting pot of a city. While most mosques these days use a loudspeaker, this Sarajevan mosque still does it old-school. A real-life muezzin appeared in the minarets, calling out Allahu akbar towards the direction of Mecca to bring the faithful to his mosque. He sings each part in a loud voice, hands cupped over his mouth, then moves to the next side to begin again, then to the next. He completely circles the balcony before exiting to the mosque, to pray and to await the next call.
