Jumping off the Jaws Bridge on Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts
You clamber atop the wooden rail of the bridge, then inch into position. Eyes focused on the water below, the anticipation seeps in. Then, you spring off the railing, arms raised over your head. Someone jumps after you, somersaulting in midair. One after the other, adolescent and adult thrill-seekers leap. On this day, as on all summer days, the ordinarily still waters beneath the American Legion Memorial Bridge on Martha's Vineyard splash to life as bridge jumpers plummet into the Atlantic. The fun isn’t finished once you pop back up from the depths, though. Real action lovers climb up the jetty, walk back to the bridge and jump again. This decades-old rite isn’t all the bridge is about—scenes from the thriller Jaws were filmed here too.
