Tuning Your Senses to Island Nightlife in Jacmel, Haiti
Bad reputation aside, there are pockets within the western end of Hispaniola worth braving a few potholes in the road to journey to. Jacmel, a port town, is one of them. Once night has swallowed the blue island waters with darkness, pop in to Ambians restaurant to dine. While nibbling on delectable cabrit (goat)—or better freshly caught fish—turn your ear to the boisterous patrons speaking Creole. Listen harder and you’ll hear the faint sounds of ocean waves crashing against the sandy shoreline in the very near distance. When your tab is settled, saddle up on a taxi bike and zoom off for a city tour by night. Your eyes will be transfixed by the early 19th-century buildings pumping Haitian Kompa in light competition with colorful tap-taps whizzing down the road. Should your senses desire more, seek out a voodoo ceremony, but beware of spirits both bad and good.
