Albany Bulb

Remember the sculptures along the Eastshore Highway, the Red Barron perched in the shallow receding waters of SF Bay. New sculptures are located at the Albany Bulb, a hidden gem. My favorite is the Lady with Arms Outstretched. Small chunks of drift wood depict every muscle in her delicate face, her flowing locks of twigs tied with multi colored rope and a fire hose headband, the patchwork sheet metal dress and wire mesh top embellished with lids from various bottles and jars. Talk about trash to treasure.

Over the hill and through the woods; into the refuse we go. With a view of a blazing orange sun setting behind the Golden Gate Bridge, the Albany Bulb estuary is home not only to geese, rabbits, and reptiles, but also to mural, graffiti, stencil, and sculpture art transformed from discarded construction debris. The bulb’s natural trails invite your participation through a ratty wicker chair placed in front of an emptied square frame looking out onto the water. They shift your attention with driftwood, metal sheets, and steel pipes combining to form a man on a Trojan-like horse angled for battle. This waterfront animal habitat and outdoor museum of urban art calls more than the curious, the thoughtful, the peaceful, or the energized. It lures all parts of us.
