Walking in Abraham’s Footsteps in the Highlands of Jordan
The biblical story of Abraham includes an incredible journey. The road he followed through the Middle East has now been symbolically memorialized as the Masar Ibrahim al Khalil, or Abraham's Path, a walking trail from Harran, Turkey, to Hebron in the West Bank. Travelers stepping along this still-in-the-works long-distance track get far off the beaten path and, by relying on community host-networks, promote local economic development through responsible and sustainable tourism. One open trail section passes through the Ajloun highlands of northern Jordan. Highlights include villages of ancient origin, olive groves, orchards and terraced fields, bronze-age dolmens, community-based tourism projects and a visit to Tel Mar Elyas, site of one of the finest Byzantine mosaics in the country.
